Large and fairly scarce edition of Herodotus' famed history, providing the foundation for our understanding of the ancient world, in the original Greek with the Latin translation in parallel columns. The engraved map stretches from the Adriatic to Persia, with North Africa, the Middle East, etc. The route of Xerxes has been traced in blue pencil, and there is a short tear along the fold. This copy of the book with some interesting ownership signatures on the front endpapers: George Lefroy, Oxford, 1799; J.H.G Lefroy, Oxford, 1800; Abraham M. Goldsmith, Victoria, British Columbia, July 18th 1864; Thomas C. Lancey, San Francisco, 1866; and Oakland Public Library, 1869. Wing H1584. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to covers, joints cracked, spine treated; some darkening and aging to contents, dark stain to gutter margins most of the way through, though not large and not affecting any text; likely lacking 2 leaves from the first quire, and possibly some leaves near the end (the collation is a little peculiar), sold as is, still a quite impressive, significant edition of Herodotus.
