Collation : A 4 (Isocrates De laudibus Helenae , here lacking); a 6 (table to Herodotus, here lacking), 2 a-d 6 dd 8 e-x 6 ( 2 a1r title and text to Herodotus, x6r colophon, x6v blank). 134 leaves only (of 144, lacking A 4 and a 6 ). 44 lines, with headline and printed marginalia. Roman type 16:112. Initial-spaces with printed guide-letters. (Wormtracks, mostly marginal, occasionally catching letters, small stain along foremargin.) 18th-century Italian stiff-paper boards (light soiling); cloth folding case. Provenance : Joseph Antonius de Donatis, given to him by Ambrosius Briulus (recipient's inscription, some marginalia) -- Charles Louis de Bourbon, duke of Parma (bookplate) -- purchased from Buddenbrooks, Boston, 1997. Laurentius Valla (1406-1457) prepared this translation ca. 1450 under the patronage of Pope Nicholas V,who encouraged great enthusiasm for the translation of Greek authors among the best scholars. Valla's scholarship brought into doubt the authenticity of the "Donation of Constantine," which undermined the temporal authority of the papacy.
