Provenance: "Captain Sir Edwyn Francis Stanhope, Bart. Royal Navy" (engraved bookplate); F.E. Kenaston (ink inscription).
Early English edition of one of the earliest science fiction novels, and one of the first to explore the "hollow earth" concept. Baron Holberg's satire was originally published in Latin in Germany and Copenhagen as Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum novam telluris in 1741. An English translation appeared in Lonodn in 1742, followed by this 1755 edition.
