HOLLAR, Wenceslaus (1607-1677). A Collection of Prints by Hollar on one hundred and forty-six copper-plates . London: R. Sayer and J. Bennett [not later than 1794].
HOLLAR, Wenceslaus (1607-1677). A Collection of Prints by Hollar on one hundred and forty-six copper-plates . London: R. Sayer and J. Bennett [not later than 1794]. 2° (376 x 234mm). Printed title and 144? etched plates only on 64 leaves, 10 folding. Contemporary marbled boards (spine crudely repaired, lower cover detached). A LARGE AND DIVERSE RANGE OF HOLLAR RESTRIKES. Among the larger prints are the artist's 'Prospect of London and Westminster', 4 plates on 2 folding sheets [Pennington 1013]; his 'Prospect of the Famous Citty of London' with 2 plates side by side on one folding sheet comparing London before and after the Great Fire (slight tears along fold lines) [P 1015]; folding views of 'ye South Side of Windsor Castle' (tear at margin) and Canterbury [3 plates on 2 sheets, P 961]; suite of 12 hunting scenes after Francis Barlow [P 2029-2040]; title and 7 prints from Animalium Ferarrum , including 'Leopard and Flowers', 'Elephant and Flowers', 'A Peony', 'Lion and Tulip' (this only drawn by H), and three others not by Hollar [P 2064-2068, 2070, 2073, 2075]; suite of 4 etchings of sea storms [P 1273-1276]; folding view of Antwerp Cathedral [P 824] and map of the Isle of Man [P 679]. In other cases there may be as many as five plates to a page, where prints from Ornatus Muliebris Anglicanus [suite of 26 plates, P 1778A-1803] or Theatrum Mulierum and Aula Veneris are engagingly combined with smaller topographical views that include Islington [suite of 6 views, P 915-920] and Tangier [title and 5 views, P 1187-1192]. Hollar's humour displays itself in one topographical print which when 'Revers'd is ye head & face of an Old Man.'
