Engraved and typographic title-pages, full-page portrait of Hoogstraten, three anatomical plates (two folding), 9 full-page engravings of the muses (Euterpe, Polymnia, Clio, Erato, etc.), eight-page Register. Middelburg Republican prize binding of gold-tooled red morocco with green morocco inlays, upper cover with central roundel gilt-lettered "Vernuft en Vlyt," spine gilt with green morocco label, gilt edges, circular wax seal affixed to inside cover (a medallion with legend :"Vernuft en Vlyt") (Some rubbing to edges, corners and spine). Provenance : Laurens Johannes Aartsen (gift inscription); Abraham Meertens a painter, 1757-1823 (signature beneath certification); acquired from Ars Libri, 1981. A HIGHLY UNUSUAL DUTCH REPUBLICAN PRIZE BINDING, with a full-page calligraphic inscription on a preliminary blank, headed "Geligheid, Vryheid, Broederschap!" (Liberty, Equality and Fraternity); recording the presentation of the book to Laurens Johannes Aartsen, a student at the Akademie der Stad Middelburg, in recognition of his promotion to the first class of draftsmanship; dated 16 May 1798; at bottom a signed certification of the Secretary Christiaan Henklots.
