HOOKER, Sir Joseph Dalton (1817-1911). The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage of H.M. Discovery Ships Erebus and Terror in the years 1839-1843, under the command of Captain Sir James Clark Ross . London: Reeve Brothers, 1844-1855. 4 volumes, large 4 o (310 x 245 mm.). 328 hand-colored lithographic plates (on 314 sheets) by Walter Hood Fitch and others. (Dampstaining, with some adhesion to plates in places, some cockling and soiling). First two volumes in contemporary half green morocco (a bit worn), second part in contemporary half calf (covers detached, broken). Provenance : Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1871 and 1890; stamps). FIRST EDITION OF HOOKER'S GREAT EARLY WORK, WITH "EXQUISITE PLATES" (Rosove), published as three parts in six volumes. Part I is sub-titled 'Flora Antarctica' and part II: 'Flora Novae-Zelandiae'. The third part (not included here) was the 'Flora Tasmaniae'. "The first two volumes, dated respectively 1844 and 1847,... comprised Hooker's original work from the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island (vol.I) and his work plus that of others from Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, and the Kerguelen Islands (vol.II)... The remaining four volumes are largely a compendium of others' botanical work. [Most of the]... exquisite plates were executed by the famous botanical artist Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892); the coloration was magnificently done" (Rosove).
