Horae, use of Rome Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre 1497 HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin. Paris: Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre 17 April 1497. Rare Book of Hours in a 16th-century binding. This edition of the Pigouchet Horae features his popular set 2 cuts, which were “evidently very favorably received by Pigouchet’s rivals and imitators, for one finds several close copies and adaptations in the various productions of other presses…” (Davies). The almanac for years 1488-1508 used here appears to be printed from the same setting used in previous editions, as is the title with the Pigouchet device. Part of the imprint date on the title is erased on this copy as in many other recorded copies. [Not H]C 8852; BMC VIII 117; Bohatta (1924) 601; Brunet V 1581, no. 34; Goff H-383; GW 13195; ISTC ih00383000; Lacombe 40. See Davies, Murray French, pp. 265-268, 289. Octavo (171 x 106mm). Printed on vellum. 14 large cuts, plus anatomical man and full-page printer’s device, and numerous small cuts in text of Evangelists, the Gospels and the saints, each page within multi-piece historiated and ornamental border, initials in red or blue, most with gold highlights, text ruled in red (imprint year on leaf a1 scratched out, anatomical man censored by small cut, preliminary and final leaves lightly soiled). 16th-century calf gilt, with gilt initials W.C.R. and G.G.G. on upper cover, spine painted grey (rebacked preserving old spine); modern quarter morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance: “W.C.R.” and “G.G.G.” (binding); “Sans changer Malannoy [the rest illegible]” (two-line contemporary annotation in ink on leaf a1v).
