Lyon: Anisson & Posuel 1697. 2 vols. in one, folio, contemporary speckled calf, rebacked, spine gilt-panelled, speckled edges, corners bumped, covers scraped, joints and extremities rubbed, repaired marginal tear to first title-page, occasional minor marginal dampstaining, a few leaves and plates discolored, some very light foxing to vol. 2, the last folding plate a bit creased. FIRST EDITIONS, general half-title, 2 titles with engraved vignettes, 133 engraved plates of naval manoeuvres and one of ensigns in vol. 1, 11 folding plates of diagrams in vol. 2, engraved head-piece vignettes and historiated initials. Berlin Katalog 1446. Loosely inserted at end are two folio leaves from an English work of the period, one (p. 15-16) listing "Sailing Instructions and Signals by Night", and the other "Additional Signals to be made by the Ships of War to the Commander in Chief" (p. 31-32). Provenance : Armorial bookplates of Edmond John Warre Slade and Boies Penrose II.
