HUBERT, Hyacinthe. Emblème d’Amour , in French, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [1780]. 153 x 97 mm. 78 leaves. Autograph manuscript with two decorated title pages and THIRTY-EIGHT WATERCOLOUR EMBLEM MINIATURES . Red morocco binding by Bretault, with half-morocco slipcase. Provenance : Mortimer L. Schiff (1877-1931, banker and scout leader; bookplate); A.H. Bright (bookplate). The imagery for the charming watercolour miniatures is mostly drawn from the natural world, the four elements feature prominently alongside birds and beasts. Each emblem miniature is accompanied by an ‘ Explication ’ of its meaning and the ‘ Moralité ’ underpinning the emblem. The emblems relate to the different aspects of love – being quick to ignite, existing after death, the fact that women can be stronger in love than men, etc. – and the morals attached to them are drawn from a variety of sources, including St. Augustine and Ovid.
