INSCRIBED BY FOUNDING FATHER AND DECLARATION SIGNER SAMUEL HUNTINGTON ON THE TITLE-PAGE, TO THE FATHER OF HIS ADOPTED SON: “The Rev Jas Cogswell from his humble serv. Saml. Huntington”. Huntington has written “Windham” above his signature. Huntington was a statesman, politician, and Founding Father from Connecticut. He signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. He attended the first Continental Congress and was the President of the 7th Continental Congress; he eventually served as the Governor of Connecticut. Rev. James Cogswell (1720-1807) was a friend of Huntington’s. Huntington was married to the daughter of Cogswell’s second wife; she couldn’t care for the youngest Cogswell child, a boy named Mason (by Cogswell’s first wife). Because of this, Mason was sent to live with Huntington and his family, who cared for him as if he was their own. An excellent association.
