IGNATIUS, Saint, of Loyola (1491-1556). Exercitia spiritualia: R. admodumin Christo patre nostro... Vienna: Collegium Societatis, 1563. 12 o (126 x 66 mm). Woodcut Jesuit device on title and colophon page, woodcut illustration and numerous woodcut initials. (Circular portion of title cut away and repaired affecting device.) Old vellum. Provenance : Episcopal Theological School Library (blind stamp on title and first leaf). Third edition and the first to appear with Loyola's name. "The 'Spiritual Exercises' form the most famous modern textbook on ascetic disipline, the nature of sin and Christian perfection by grace" (PMM). Ignatius of Loyola was the founder of the Jesuit Society and this text became with the Constitutiones the handbook of the Society which is devoted to educational, missonary, and other active works.
