Views of the Qtub Minar complex, Delhi. 1865. 5 albumen prints. Each circa 24 x 29 cm and 2 smaller. Each sandwich-mounted in mat, with title and caption labels affixed below the image to the mount. Eugene Clutterbuck Impey of the Fifth Bengal Native Infantry, served much of his career in what is today Rajasthan, becoming the Assistant Agent to the Governor General in Rajputana in 1856 and the Political Agent in Alwar in 1858. He was an enthusiastic amateur photographer and his love for India's antiquities is evident in his photographs. The images offered here are from the publication "Delhi, Agra, and Rajpootana" published in 1865 by Cundall, Downes and Co., London. It is Impey's only known work and only 25 copies are believed to have been published. The views include part of the temple Mosque, northwest corner; part of the Jain Temple, northern side of the inner enclosure and tombs near Delhi. – Some retouched spots, two slightly faded in edges, otherwise in good to very good condition with strong contrasts. Lit.: Robert Flynn Johnson (ed.). Reverie and Reality. Nineteenth Century Photographs of India from the Ehrenfeld Collection. San Francisco 2004, see p. 157.
