IMPORTANT 19TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM COMPILED BY MARTIN BLADEN HAWKE, 7TH BARON HAWKE (1860-1938), YORKSHIRE AND ENGLAND CRICKETER, WITH FINE AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHS FROM HIS ENGLAND XI CRICKET TOUR OF 1887 including street scenes, buildings, views, cricket grounds, ethnic people, etc. The Australian section consist of 59 full-page and half-page mounted albumen photographs, starting at the arrival port of Albany, then Adelaide and Melbourne and the journeys en-route. The first part of the album contains a further 13 earlier photographs of Naples and Aden. The album is missing the spine and lower board, upper board detached/warped with 'M. B. HAWKE' stamped in gilt. The photographs are generally in good condition. M B Hawke was appointed captain of Yorkshire cricket club in 1882 at the age of 22. His career with Yorkshire spanned from 1881-1911. In 1887, he toured Australia with one of two 'England' teams touring simultaneously - the "G F Vernon XI", which Hawke captained initially. He played in three first-class matches against South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. However, on Tuesday 6 December Hawke received news of his father's death, which curtailed his tour and explains why the Australian photographs end somewhat prematurely. A rare and possibly unique half-page photograph of the Vernon XI cricket team is pasted on the verso of the 18th card leaf - Hawke sits middle row centre, and Vernon is standing, top left
