oil on canvas entitled Country Grocery in Kennebunkport, Maine, signed in the lower left Abbott Graves / Kennebunkport / Maine and on the reverse Painted By / Abbott Graves / Studio 110 Tremont St. / Boston / Mass. A monumental work with exceptional detail depicting a turn-of-the-century grocery and drygoods store in Kennebunkport, Maine. Retains its original black and gilt frame; 50.25" x 68.25" (w/frame); 42" x 60" (w/o frame). Abbott Graves (1859-1936), born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, studied at MIT before going to Paris to work under Cormon, Laurens, and Gervais. He taught at the Cowles Art School in Boston before opening his own art school there in 1891. He moved his school to Kennebunkport, but closed its doors in 1902. He frequently traveled from his New England homes to Paris, and from 1902-1905, he worked as an illustrator for French magazines. Graves exhibited at the NAD (1892), PAFA (1895, 1913-4), Paris Salon (1899), Boston AC (1895-1909), and the Expo des Beaux Arts, Paris (1905). He is best known for his floral still lifes, but also produced impressionistic landscapes and wonderfully detailed genre paintings depicting scenes from rural life. This particular scene includes fourteen figures and a wide range of goods, from produce to lanterns. Shops such as this often acted as the social center of small communities. Locals would gather to discuss current events, gossip, and, of course, pick up their mail and whatever merchandise they needed. The large size sets this work apart from most of Graves' work. He painted the identical scene on a much smaller scale (approx. 20" x 30"); that painting has appeared on the market three times between 2000 and 2002. The painting offered here was recently discovered in southwestern Ohio. Condition:Cleaned and relined in 2003, complete conservation report and photographs accompany the painting; VG.
