Impressive collection of more than 1000 letters (more than 2500 pages), greetings and carte de visites with authographs from Vilhelm Herold's letter archive. Contributions from several hundreds of Danish and Scadinavian/European cultural personages of the time, including artists, politicians, royals, composers, actors, singers, writers, critics etc. The collection contains contributions from Edvard Grieg, Nina Grieg. Wilhelmine Heise, Hugo Alfven, Jeppe Aakjær, Georg Brandes Johannes Ring, P.E. Lange Müller, Arne Weel, Fritz Syberg Johs. V. Jensen, Carl Ewald, Alfred Schmidt, Gunnar Hauch, Otto Benzon, Karl lasen, Erik Skram, Sophus Michaëlis, Julius Steenberg, Prince Valdemar, Prinsesss Helena, Princess Ingeborg. Charlotte Knollys, Dronning, Carl von Knorring, Nanny Larsén-Todsen, Lola Artôt de Padilla, Selma Olizka, Aino Ackté, Ch.r Chrisitansen, Anna Norrie-de Verdier, Eugen d'Albert, John Forsell, Bjørn Talén and many more. The opera singer and sculptor Vilhelm Herold holds a very special place in the history of Danish opera. He made his debut at the Danish Royal Theatre in 1893, and as one of the greatest tenors of the time, he was appointed Royal Chamber Singer in 1901. A few years later he trained with the prominent singing teachers Devillier and Giovanni Sbriglia in Paris. His singing talent in dramatic roles made him immensely popular and resulted in a large number of significant tenor parts such as Don José in Carmen as well as leading roles in operas such as Aladdin, Werther and Lohengrin. Herold performed extensively on the stages of European national theatres, and in London, where Covent Garden was his forum, he sang at a party with King Edward VII on the occasion of King Alfonso's wedding. Herold performed a total of 29 roles during his career, and his motto was: “The atmosphere – not just the voice”. The letters to Herold are certainly all full of atmosphere and admiration, and they testify to broadminded artist circles with high demands concerning art. Herold was not only a musical talent but also a skilled sculptor. He primarily made models of his friends and acquaintances, such as the painters P.S. Krøyer and Michael Ancher. Provenance: Descendants of royal chamber singer and sculptor Vilhelm Christoffer Herold (1865–1937).
