INQUISITION]. [NIETO, DAVID]. Respuesta al sermon, predicado por el Arobispo de Cangranor, en el Auto de Fe; celebrado en Lisboa, en 6. Setiembre Anno 1705. Por el Author de las Noticias Reconditas de la Inquisicion. Obra Posthuma. Villa-Franca [=London]: Carlos Vero, [1729]. 8vo, later calf, joints split . Kayserling, 77; Inocencio da Silva IX: p. 107, Remedios, p. 140, Neves 19, Roth, Marrano Typography, p. 8, Vekene 898. EXTREMELY RARE. A famous Jewish reply by Haham David Nieto of London published posthumously to an anti-Jewish sermon preached at an Auto-da-F, included in this publication (see description below). [ Bound with: ] ANUNCIACAO JUSTINIANO, DIOGO DA. Sermam do Auto da Fe que se celebrou na Praza do Rocio desta Cidade de Lisboa, junto dos Pazos da Inquisizam, em 6. de Setembro, do Anno de 1705. Lisbon: Antonio Pedro Ozogalrao, 1705. [false address for London: 1729]. In Portugal and Spain, accounts of the Auto-da-F were a popular genre. They offered full details of acts of faith by which the Catholic Church ritually exorcized its often imaginary enemies. The accounts published the names of the victims and the nature of their punishment, with particulars of who was burned alive, who after garroting, or who in effigy. Printed accounts of such happenings form one of the main sources of information for the proceedings. In Madrid alone, Isidro Joseph Serrete, who lived close to the building where the Inquisition was housed, printed reports on some 57 Autos-de-F. These were sold as separate broadsheets or gathered in volumes. According to the historian Julio Caro Baroja author of an authoritative history of the Spanish Jews, both types of publications are extremely scarce nowadays. Similarly, the sermons preached at the Auto-da-F were often subsequently published: in Portuguese alone, about 75 are extant in print. They often speak of the penitents as Jews, and in terms of the most outrageous vituperation. Most noteworthy is the sermon delivered on Sept. 6, 1705 at the great Auto-da-F held at Lisbon by the archbishop of Cranganore before sixty-six miserable victims. The sermon was notable for the violence of its language. Upon its publication, David Nieto, Haham in London, and author of an anonymously published work directed against the Inquisition (Noticias reconditas..., 1722 ), took up the challenge of replying to his Christian challenger in a fitting way. He did so by composing a sermon published under the pseudonym Carlos Vero (Charles Truth), a masterpiece of cool, clear-headed theological scholarship in which he exposed the vituperation against the Jews far from any reasonable indictment against their doctrines. The sermon was not without influence in weakening the prestige and destroying the influence of the Inquisition in Portugal. See Cecil Roth in Enc. Judaica, s.v. Inquisition and H.P. Salomon "New Light on the Portuguese Inquisition: The Second Reply to the Archbishop of Cranganor", Studia Rosenthaliana , 5,2 (1971), 178-86 -- VERO, CARLOS [=Nieto, David]. The Inquisition and Judaism. A sermon addressed to Jewish Martyrs, on the Occasion of an Auto da Fe at Lisbon, 1705 by the Archbishop of Cranganor. Also a Reply to the Sermon, by Carlos Vero. Translated by Moses Mocatta. London: J. Wertheimer and Co., 1845. 8vo, contemporary cloth. (2)
