ISLAMIC MANUSCRIPTS – KORAN, in Arabic. [Sudan, late 19th Century]. 2° (275 x 210 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 187 leaves, text in brown, red, yellow and green inks, 17 lines per page, with decorative arabesques in margins or within text, and scattered marginal notes. Disbound, with loose sheets of textblock laid into a folding case that has been fabricated out of the original Islamic binding, much of the original leather retained, with new leather strap. Not collated correctly: many of the disbound leaves are oriented in the wrong direction (with the gutter margin on the outside).

Contemporary Islamic full olive-green calf, inlaid red arabesque within vertical gilt roll on center of each cover, gilt-rolled borders with gilt corner ornaments, overlying flap decorated in a similar fashion with inlaid red arabesque, gilt rolls and ornaments, fore-edge flap gilt, smooth spine plain. Consists of quotations from the Koran followed by discussions of what they mean.
