Title: It Catches My Heart in its Hands: New & Selected Poems 1955-1963 Author: Bukowski, Charles Place: [New Orleans] Publisher: Loujon Press Date: 1963 Description: 97 pp. Introduction by John William Corrington. With preliminary leaves of various colors and differing widths. 10x7, hand-bound in stiff pictorial wrappers, attached jacket with decorative cork-lined front cover and attached glassine with tissue-guards and pictorial flap over fore-edge around from rear. One of 777 copies on different coloured hand-printed paper. First Edition. Signed by Charles Bukowski in silver ink, dated 5-25-63, on the front free endpaper. Considered by many to be Bukowski's most beautifully produced book. Copyright page states the book was first printed October 1963, which is after Bukowski’s signature date. Includes 4 supporting / related paper items: autograph letter signed by publisher / editor Jon Webb to Arthur W. Woleben III (of Los Angeles) thanking him for his letter and discusses the labor of love that went into the book. Written on the verso of the Loujon Press printed announcement about unforeseen extra production costs forcing the pricing to increase (including a hand-written price for the regular issue); another autograph letter signed by Jon Webb to Woleben on rubberstamped The Outsider (New Orleans) letterhead about a replacement copy; original front cover portion of the printed & pictorial mailing envelope (cut-out & folded) postmarked Jan. 13, 1964 (Woleben’s addressed inked by hand); and a printed facsimile Bukowski letter (by Jon and Lou) about his deeply favorable reactions to the elaborate production; all laid in.
