IVOR ROBERTS JONES RA (1913-1996) bronze - a monumental sculpture of Sir Winston Churchill 86.5cms high x 130cms wide¦Auctioneer`s note: the bronze sculpture is the third of six cast from the original iconic Parliament Square standing sculpture of Sir Winston Churchill which was unveiled in 1973 and is the artist`s most famous work. The casting process was overseen by sculptor Nigel Boonham FRBS, Past President of the Society of Portrait Sculptors on behalf of the Trustees of the Ivor Roberts Estate.¦Ivor Roberts Jones was born in Oswestry, studied at Oswestry School and Worksop College before attending Goldsmiths College, London and the RA. He was a founder member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors in 1953 and was head of sculpture at Goldsmith`s College of Art from 1964-1978. His most notable works include `The Borderland Farmer` which stands in his home town, portraits of Viscount Tonypandy which is held at the National Portrait Gallery, the composer Yehudi Menuhin and several life-size decorated-military figures. The sculptor`s impressive and celebrated 1984 work `The Two Kings` located at Harlech Castle illustrates a scene from Welsh mythology in which Bendigeidfran carries the body of his nephew. This portrait of Sir Winston Churchill is said to be based on a 1941 photograph as the then wartime Prime Minister inspects the smouldering bomb wreckage of a House of Commons chamber.¦The Trustees of the Ivor Roberts-Jones Estate have given permission for a limited edition of only 6 bronze casts to be created from the head and shoulders of the statue at Parliament Square. No other casts will be authorised and so this auction represents a unique opportunity to acquire probably the most iconic of Welsh sculptures ever to have been created.¦Please note that the plinth on which it stands is temporary and belongs to the auctioneers.
