Crown diameter 5", rise at front 2", rise at rear 5.75". Red and blue wool broadcloth with bound painted visor and embroidered circle on top of crown. Brown polished cotton lining with pasteboard stiffener and 1.5" leather sweatband. New York State chinstrap buttons with Scovill backmarks. Interior label marked "BAKER & McKENNEY / MILITARY GOODS / 141 / GRAND ST. / NEW YORK". Address indicates this cap was likely made in 1865, as the firm of Baker & McKenney did not move to the Grand Street address until December 1864. Front of cap shows 1.5" x 2" remnants of a sewn patch, very likely an officer's embroidered regimental insignia. Caps of this type were worn by the famous 14th NYSM "14th Brooklyn" Zouave Regiment, though it is not definitive if this cap was worn by a member of this unit. Condition: Fair to good. Colors are bright and vibrant with some detaching of sweatband from body. Some crazing of paint on bottom of brim, with some remnants of what appears to be paper or cardboard, possibly from a previous mounting of the piece. Stitching to circle on crown mostly separated with newsprint. Lining has undone with a portion that has become completely separated. Maker's mark is somewhat legible. Some separation of sweatband from body, chinstrap missing.
