JACKSON, ANDREW and MARTIN VAN BUREN, Presidents . Printed document signed ("Andrew Jackson" as President and "M Van Buren" as Vice-President), Washington, D.C., 11 June 1830. 1 page, folio, 365 x 270mm. (19 x 15 3/4 in.), ON PARCHMENT, accomplished in manuscript, with scalloped head and great seal of the United States . Fine. A ship's passport with vignettes of an American frigate and harbor scene, allowing the ship "...Brandt of New Bedford...to Pass with her Company Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance, seisure or molestation..." A New Bedford whaler's maiden voyage. The Brandt made more than eleven whaling voyages before being lost in the Galapagos Islands in 1853. Ship's passports signed by Jackson and Van Buren are relatively uncommon. Provenance : Barbara Johnson Whaling Collection (sale, Sotheby's, 24 September 1982, lot 177).
