Genl."), on a small sheet of good-quality laid paper paper ( 5 7/8 x 3½ in., partial watermark ), neatly affixed above the signature (resembling a carte-de-visite) is an albumen of a famous early image of Jackson in full ( the albumen: 3½ x 2½ in. ). The whole neatly mounted on heavy, early vintage card. Signature a bit light, but very clear .

The whole neatly mounted on heavy, early vintage card. Signature a bit light, but very clear . STRONGLY SUGGESTIVE OF A SIGNED CARTE-DE-VISITE. A puzzling combination. We postulate that this may have been an unsigned albumen affixed to a blank album leaf, to which Jackson--perhaps at the request of the album's owner--added a characteristic signature, following the convention of signing beneath the image. At a later date, the sheet was evidently cut down for matting and framing. SIGNED PHOTOS OF JACKSON ARE OF EXTREME RARITY, and while this hybrid is not a signed photograph it is a close visual suggestion of a signed carte-de-visite. Our inquiries have not located a single Jackson signed carte-de-visite of war date.
