JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (1632-1712). Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique, ou Description Generale du Globe Terrestre et Aquatique en Deux-Plans Hemispheres . [Amsterdam or Paris:] 1691.
JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (1632-1712). Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique, ou Description Generale du Globe Terrestre et Aquatique en Deux-Plans Hemispheres . [Amsterdam or Paris:] 1691. Large hand-colored engraved twin-hemisphere world map on two sheets. Coat-of-arms of and dedication to the Dauphin of France, 546 x 905 mm (630 x 939 mm). Shows California as an island, and partial New Zealand and Australia. Beautifully colored example of Jaillot's map of the world after Sanson. "The two hemispheres are drawn on an enlarged scale, engraved with distinction, and usually printed on heavy quality paper. The limited decoration enhances the overall effect: at the top cherubs with flowing banners are seated astride dolphins and support the arms of France. At the bottom a bold cartouche is flanked by two twin-tailed mermen" Shirley 462 fourth plate, state I.
