Issued as Harper’s Half-Hour Series , No. 82, this novella by Henry James first appeared in Cornhill Magazine in June–July 1878, and here in book form the following year. The book was simultaneously issued in green cloth, and surviving copies in wrappers are very scarce. 16mo. Original printed tan-gray wrappers (some chips at corners and a few small repairs to spine); morocco slipcase. Provenance : faint early owner’s signature on front wrapper.
