Two costumes - Metal, fabric, leather, wood, bone and various materials - With a metal frame (each) - 213 x 125 x 80 cm (metal frame) - 170 x 124 x 65 cm and 125 x 125 x 83 cm
Remarks Idea by Jan Fabre and Ilya Kabakov made by Jan Fabre There are two versions of each costume, all 4 of them are original. The other version was used during the performance "A Meeting" in 1997. Literature "Een ontmoeting/Vstrecha" Jan Fabre & Ilya Kabakov Publ. Kunstvereniging Diepenheim 1999 (illustration of the first set of scene costumes) With photo certificate by Jan Fabre With photo certificate by Ronny Van de Velde Documentation With documentation THE BEETLE AND THE FLY OVERLOOK THE WORLD The work of the Russian-born American artist Ilya Kabakov (°1933) is strongly anchored in the sociocultural context of the Soviet Union in which he grew up. Through the symbiosis of elements from everyday life and conceptual ideas, he conveys a universal message. He creates fictional biographies, often with an autobiographical approach, which he uses in his paintings, drawings and installations. Like Kabakov, Jan Fabre is one of the most versatile artists in the international art scene. Fabre develops a network of metaphors across different disciplines, inspired by the world of insects. Scientific knowledge and poetic imagination go hand in hand and take shape in drawings, sculptures, films and installations. "A meeting / Vstrecha" is a wonderful example of the multidisciplinarity of both artists. The meeting between the beetle and the fly is a video artwork in which Fabre and Kabakov dress up like the two animals. For the occasion Fabre designed two costumes with sculptural allures. Made of bone, animal skin and leather, among other things, the costumes look like huge, human-sized preserved insects. The beetle (Fabre) and the fly (Kabakov) meet at Kabakov's place in New York. High up on the rooftop and deep in the basement, they are far away from people, where the insect world reigns. The artists dance around each other and speak each in their mother tongue, Dutch and Russian. From their insect perspective they discuss social, artistic and ecological principles of life. The language barrier doesn't seem to be an issue, on the contrary: the meeting is a celebration in which different points of view are exchanged and find each other. Kabakov to Fabre: "Dear scarab, why do the two of us work with the insects? You with the scarabs and I with the flies? There are several reasons. One is the existence of a fly society, a culture, a civilization of flies unknown to humans and thousands of years old. This civilization exists both in the cosmos and on the surface of the ground. The dance of the flies is a system of information connected to a centre that is very highly placed in the universe."
