Le dessin et le suivant sont deux très rares exemples d'aquarelles de la main de van Goyen. Bien que plusieurs autres soient citées dans des catalogues de ventes hollandais du XVIIIe siècle, seulement cinq sont aujourd'hui connues: les deux de la collection Delon, deux autres au Musée de l'Ermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg, également datées 1626 (Beck, op. cit., vol. I, nos 57 et 58, repr.), et enfin une, datée 1627, au Rijksmuseum d'Amsterdam (Schapelhouman et Schatborn, op. cit., no 130, repr.). Il semble que l'artiste n'utilisa l'aquarelle qu'au tout début de sa carrière, alors que la plupart de ses dessins postérieurs sont à la pierre noire, parfois agrémentée de lavis gris.
Bien que ce dessin et le suivant soient de mêmes dimensions et puissent être considérés comme des pendants, ils semblent n'avoir été réunis qu'à la vente de 1975 à Amsterdam où ils furent acquis par Alain Delon.
This drawing and the following lotare two very rare examples of van Goyen's watercolours . Although many others are mentioned in 18th century Dutch auction catalogues, only five are known today: two in the Delon collection, two in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, also dated 1626 (Beck, op. cit., vol. I, nos. 57 and 58, repr.), and another, dated 1627, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Schapelhouman and Schatborn, op. cit., no. 130, repr.). It seems that the artist mostly used watercolour at the very beginning of his career, as the majority of his later drawings are in black chalk, sometimes with grey wash.
