Japanese, ca 1898-1899, A complete five volume set of hand-printed woodcut color crepe paper books with hand-painted woodblocks by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn. Includes "The Boy Who Drew Cats," "The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling," "The Chin Chin Kobakama," "The Fountain of Youth," and "The Goblin Spider." All five books are in original folding case; ht. 8 in. Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was a noted journalist, author, educator, translator, and interpreter of Japanese life and culture. He spent a number of years in Cincinnati, Ohio as a reporter and writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper. He also wrote, along with Henry Farny, a weekly illustrated journal devoted to art, literature and satire. He left Cincinnati for New Orleans, where his writing helped to promote the town, making him something of a folk hero there even today (his home is on the National Register). He was sent to Japan as a Far East correspondent, and settled into Japanese culture for the remainder of his life.
