Title: Japanese lacquer photograph album with ivory inlays Author: ** Place: [Japan] Publisher: Date: [c.1890] Description: With 50 hand-colored albumen photographs 21x26.5 cm. (8¼x10½"), mounted on card-stock paper, with tissue-guards. (Oblong 4to) 25.7x34.5 cm. (10x13¾"), Japanese lacquer album in brown with hand-painted floral pattern, front cover with circular black center, hand-painted in gold, red and light brown, with ivory inlays for hands and faces, showing a woman and a child working in a garden, a home and a mountain in the background, hinges reinforced, all edges gilt. A nice perspective on late nineteenth century Japan, with professional photographs; most are captioned in the negative, some are captioned in ink on the margin below the photograph. Scenes include: views of Tokyo, Yokohama, Enoshima Island, Kamakura, Nagoya, Kyota, Nara, Kobe, Iwakuni, Maikonohama, Nikko & Kegon Waterfall, and Matsushima. Encompassing temples, street and park scenes, cherry blossoms, ponds, boats, islands, bridges, gardens, waterfalls, various women in fancy dress, and more. Lot Amendments Condition: Album lacks spine, scuffs to lacquer, mostly at corners; light finger soiling at margins of leaves; very good. Rare with all the ivory inlays intact. Item number: 217362
