Jasper Francis Cropsey American, 1823-1900 Study of the Ramapo River, 1876 Signed J. E. F. and dated 1876 (ll) Oil on paper laid to board 3 3/8 x 7 1/4 inches This work [2298 LCX] will be included in the catalogue raisonne, Jasper Francis Cropsey Works in Oil, Volume Two: 1864-1900, to be published by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation. According to Kenneth W. Maddox, Art Historian, the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, "The composition showing a decrepit bridge with figures and cattle wading in the Ramapo River was frequently used by the artist from the 1870s through the 1890s. For Cropsey's paintings of the Ramapo River and Ramapo Valley and of the 'capriccio of the Spindly Bridge,' see Appendix. Another small study by Cropsey, not signed nor dated, Sunspray on the Hudson, oil on canvas, 4 ¼ x 6 inches, Private collection, Portland, Maine NCF 233, exhibits the same tacking holes as this study. From ca. 1875 to 1880 Cropsey made eight somewhat similar small oil studies which are now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D. C. See Untitled, ca. 1875-80, oil on paperboard, 4 x 5 ½ inches, NCF 1398; Untitled, ca. 1875-80, oil on canvas, 3 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches NCF 1401; Untitled, 1876, oil on canvas, 4 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches, NCF 1400; Untitled, 1876, oil on canvas, 4 3/8 x 6 ½ inches, NCF 1403; Untitled, 1876, oil on canvas, 5 x 5 7/8 inches, NCF 1404; Untitled, 1877, oil on canvas, 4 ½ x 6 ¼ inches NCF 1406; Untitled, 1878, oil on paperboard, 3 ¾ x 7 inches NCF 1405; and Untitled, 1880, oil on canvas, 3 5/8 x 6 3/8 inches NCF 1402." We extend our thanks to Dr. Maddox for his very generous assistance in documenting the present work. C Property of a Manhattan Lady
