JEFFERSON, THOMAS and JAMES MADISON, Presidents. Engraved document jointly signed ("Th:Jefferson" as President and "James Madison" as Secretary of State). Np, 10 September 1802. One page, folio, on parchment, calligraphic text at top: "By the President of the United States of America," beneath a large vignette of a fully rigged ship and a lighthouse on a rocky isle, scalloped edge at top, trimmed on other sides with a rectangular piece cut out of vignette affecting some engraved and manuscript text (but not affecting signatures), wrinkled and soiled, accomplished in manuscript (ink very faded, Madison's readable but very faint) A ships passport for the brig Felicity William Walker Jefferson's signature clearly legible.
