JEFFERSON, THOMAS and JAMES MADISON, Presidents . Printed document signed ("Th:Jefferson") as President, countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State, Washington, D.C., 5 June 1805. 1 page, oblong folio, accomplished in manuscript, two paper seals, light foxing, matted and framed .FOUR-LANGUAGE SHIP'S PAPERS for the schooner General Greene (probably named after General Nathaniel Greene) commanded by Edward Jones "...laden with Sundries per Manifest," and sailing from Philadelphia to Guadalupe in the French West Indies. Ship's papers, a document with text in French, Spanish, English and Dutch, attempted to insure safe passage for American ships (which had been subject to seizure at sea by France and England), by affirming the vessels' neutral ownersip and declaring that "no subjects of the present belligerent powers have any part or portion therein, directly nor indirectly."
