JEFFERSON, THOMAS, President . Autograph free frank ("free Th:Jefferson Pr. U.S.") as President, on folded cover sheet (letter not present) addressed in Jefferson's hand to "Governor [James] Monroe Richmond," docketed (by Monroe?) "June 26 1802," very clear circular red "Washn. City" datestamp and "Free" handstamp, very slightly browned at right-hand edge, two clean tears where opened, otherwise fine. PRESIDENT JEFFERSON TO GOVERNOR MONROE A particularly provocative cover from the Stern Collection, linking two great Virginians who held the office of President. Monroe, Governor of Virginia, was appointed the next year by Jefferson to the post of Minister to Great Britain. The backflap of the cover sheet carries an interesting secretarial endorsement, which reveals the content of the letter: "Waiting Mr Mon---'s [Monroe's] recommendation of proper subjects for commissioners of Bankruptcy -- Republicans not Federalists." On a side flap is a jotted list of six names in Monroe's hand, perhaps of individuals of good Republican credentials whom he planned to recommend to President Jefferson as commissioners. Provenance : Edward Stern, History , plate 6, no.4, plus pencilled price code and signature; small C.C. Hart stamp.
