JEFFERSON, THOMAS, President . Autograph free frank ("Th:Jefferson"), on folded cover sheet (letter not present) addressed in Jefferson's hand to "Caesar A. Rodney Atty Genl. of the U.S. Washington, D.C.," endorsed "Free" at top right in an unidentified early hand, and with date "Feb. 10 1810" at left-hand edge, no postmark, two minor tears to flaps neatly repaired, otherwise very good. Caesar Augustus Rodney (1772-1824), a nephew of the Delaware Signer, Caesar Rodney, was a staunch Jeffersonian and served in Congress from 1802-1804. In 1807 Jefferson appointed him Attorney General, a post he retained until 1811, in Madison's administration, until 1811. From the draft letter in the Jefferson Papers, it is known that in the present letter, Jefferson commented on Napoleon as "the scourge" of Europe, considered reports of the mental disorders of George III and other political matters (see Calendar of the Correspondence of Thomas Jefferson Part I, p.396. Provenance : "10-29-46 Picher sale," noted in pencil.
