Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) TWO SISTERS c.1853. A half-plate, hand-coloured daguerreotype portrait, with decorative gilt mat, photographers stamp recto, housed in a side-hinged, push-button, maroon leather case, embossed with floral design. These children are clearly from the higher stratum of American Society. Gurney's focussed portrait composition, with the two inquisitive girls encapsulated by the blackness of the drop behind them, and with the swirling sumptuous carpet below, accentuating their pantaloons, is a truly inspired piece of American daguerreotypist portraiture.
