JOHANN REINHOLD FORSTER (1729-1798) History of the Voyages and Discoveries made in the North. Translated from the German of... Forster . London: for G.G.J and J.Robinson, 1786. 4° (279 x 220mm). Half-title, 1p. errata, 2pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. 3 folding engraved maps. (Some spotting to maps, light offsetting from maps onto facing leaves (including the title). Contemporary speckled calf, covers with gilt fillet at outer edge, spine in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST LONDON EDITION of Forster's Geschichte der Entdeckungen und Schiffahrten im Norden published in Frankfurt in 1784. Two English-language editions were published in 1776: the present example and another in Dublin. The work is a 'Chronicle of northern hemispheric exploration from antiquity to the middle of the 18th century, which includes... chapters on the voyages of principal seafaring countries, beginning in the 15th century' (Arctic Bibliography).
