London: for G.G.J and J.Robinson, 1776. 4° (279 x 220mm). 1p. errata, 3 folding engraved maps. (Some spotting, generally light.) Contemporary diced russia gilt (expertly rebacked to style). Provenance : Anthony Michaelis ('A.R.Michaelis' bookplate, sale Christie's 22 April 1988, lot 286). ENGLISH EDITION of Forster's Geschichte der Entdeckungen und Schiffahrten im Norden published in Frankfurt in 1784. Two English-language editions were published in 1776: the present example and another in Dublin. The work is a 'Chronicle of northern hemispheric exploration from antiquity to the middle of the 18th century, which includes... chapters on the voyages of principal seafaring countries, beginning in the 15th century' (Arctic Bibliography 5159.)
