Contemporary German mottled calf, spines in six compartments with raised bands, with green morocco lettering-pieces (light scuffing to extremities). A VERY RARE GERMAN FLOWER BOOK WITH HAND-COLOURED "DELICATELY ETCHED PLATES" ( Great Flower Books ). It was available with the text in both French and German, and the subscriber's list records 91 names for the 100 copies. Kerner, who drew, engraved and perhaps coloured the plates, was a German-born botanist and botanical artist who lectured at the Carls Universitt in Stuttgart. The subject of the work -- plants with economic potential -- has ensured that Kerner has encompassed a wide range of plants from the Amaryllis formosissima (vol.I, plate 43, see illustration) to a fine portrait of a beetroot ( Beta cicla rothe Rbe , vol.III, plate 251). Stafleu & Cowan had seen only the incomplete Berlin Botanical Gardens and Museum copy, NUC records only the Vassar College copy, Dunthorne, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society copy (with French text), and the Natural History Museum, London, also have a copy.
