Johannes Van Ceulen. A magnificent and extremely rare 18K gold, silver, enamel and gem-set openface pair cased verge watch, the enamel miniature attritubed to Robert Vauquer, Blois Signed J. Van Ceulen Le Jeune, Hagae, No. 1378, circa 1710, the enamel painting attributed to Robert Vauquer, Blois, circa 1660 Movement: Manual, gilt brass full plate, fusée with chain, square baluster pillars, verge escapement, three-arm plain steel balance, flat balance spring with 2 ½ turns, rack and pinion regulator, English-style pierced and engraved cock with streamers and engraved mask, signed Dial: Gold champlevé, Roman hour numerals with rose-diamond half hour marks, signed Case: Inner: two body, plain polished, 49 mm. diam. Outer: two body, the bezels of pierced silver leaf work entirely set with rose diamonds, eight larger stones paired with eight large rubies, the back inset with a very finely painted on enamel panel depicting Theagenes and Chariclea, probably after Charles Poerson (1609-1667), the interior painted with Venus and Adonis in a landscape, 57 mm. diam.
