(John, art critic and social critic, 1819-1900) [Notes on Frederick the Great], autograph manuscript, 14pp. (pp. numbered 5-18), laid in, folds, slightly browned, bound in a later handsome crushed and polished brown morocco, gilt, edges a little rubbed, upper hinge splitting at tail, by Riviere, folio, [c. 1866]. *** Ruskin's notes on Thomas Carlyle's "History of Friedrich II" in preparation for his essay, "Notes on the Economies of of the Kings of Prussia" and published in his collection of essays on war, "The Crown of Wild Olive", 1866. Much of the text here was used in the published essay regarding the early years of the Austrian and Prussian monarchies, from the year 900 to 1667.
