Toucans and Trogons are amongst the most spectacular of all bird families. The Toucans are ideally suited to Gould's and Edward Lear's dramatic approach to illustration, and from the introduction to the second work it is clear that the Trogons were among Gould's favourite species: "The trogons may dispute the palm of beauty with humming-birds. Their plumage in certain parts shines with metallic brilliancy, and exhibits all the colours of the rainbow".
