Beschreibung:

JOHN GOULD (1804-1881) AND NICHOLAS AYLWARD VIGORS (1787-1840). A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains. London: [for the Author, 1831]-1832. Large 2° (538 x 360mm). 76 (of 80) hand-coloured lithographic plates by Elizabeth Gould after sketches by John Gould, printed by Charles Hullmandel, without text. (Lacking all text leaves except title and dedication, lacking plates 60, 62, 64, and 68 (Sauer numbering), light spotting, very occasional small stain, 3 sheets lightly browned.) Contemporary half purple morocco, gilt border and spine, t.e.g., (slightly worn). First edition of Gourl's first work, the first issue with the backgrounds uncoloured. It is said that Gould used some of the bird skins sent back by Brian Hodgson to the British Museum for a number of the birds illustrated in this work. This was apparently done without permission and caused some disagreement between the two ornithologists. Zimmer p.251; Anker 168; Fine Bird Books p.77; Wood p.364; Nissen IVB 374; Sauer 1.
