JOHN LEWIS RILEY “Young girl”, head and shoulders study, (shoulders blank), oil on canvas, signed, inscribed “Rossetti …1866” lower right, 54 cm x 45 cm CONDITION REPORTS The work has several areas of crazing, particularly to the darker areas of the painting surrounding the head and to the body area. Has been painted within an oval and may have been in an oval slip at some point, or not. There are three areas of repair verso which are not visible to the naked eye from the front and interestingly do not seem to appear under UV light. Frame basically sound though arguably could do with some attention in certain areas. See images for further detail. As far as we know this is not a copy of a known Rosetti portrait though this was an area of investigation prior to cataloguing which was fruitless as we found no evidence. Provenance - from a good private local deceased estate. No more known.
