framed with modern copy of a classic Mosby photo. Card approx. 2.5 x 4.24", with bold "Jno. S. Mosby." The outbreak of war found the 27-year-old Mosby practicing law in Virginia. He enlisted as a private in the 1st VA Cavalry, and quickly garnering the attention of JEB Stuart. He was promoted to field & staff as Stuart's aide-de-camp and scout. He was captured and exchanged, and after his return to Stuart was permitted to recruit a band of partisan rangers from northern Virginia. Mosby's raiders wreaked havoc on Union supply lines, requiring Union commanders to assign extra troops to guarding supplies as well as hunting down the raiders. Federal commanders at all levels became so frustrated with Mosby's raids, that many began summarily executing all partisan rangers captured. In 1864 George Custer executed six of Mosby's men. Mosby retaliated by executing seven of Custer's. A note pinned to one of the bodies said that all other captives would be treated as POW's unless Union commanders, especially Custer, insisted on treating his men otherwise. The execution of raiders (mostly) stopped. Mosby did not surrender, but simply disbanded his men after Lee's surrender. He was pardoned in 1866, and shortly thereafter befriended Grant, supporting him in both presidential elections, to the dismay of many Southerners. Condition: Card appears to be in excellent condition, but not removed from frame.
