John Thomas Serres British, 1759-1825 The "Royal Charlotte" Yacht of King George III in Weymouth Harbor, 1801 British, 1759-1825 The "Royal Charlotte" Yacht of King George III in Weymouth Harbor, 1801 Signed JT Serres and dated 1801 (ll) Watercolor on paper Sight 11 x 17 1/2 inches (27.9 x 44.5 cm) Succeeding his father, Dominic Serres in the same position, John Serres was official marine painter to George III beginning in 1793. Later he accompanied the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean, sketching the coasts of France and Spain as part of the war effort against Napoleon. These sketches were published in book form in The Little Sea Torch in 1801. This watercolor documents a recorded visit by the King to Weymouth in 1801 celebrated with a dinner and ball on his ninty-foot yacht, which was named for Queen Charlotte [C.M. Gavin, Royal Yachts, London, 1932, p. 92]. The six-paired-oared gigs with coxswains in the water around the vessel may have been part of the celebration.
Slight fading to the paper. Few spots of foxing in the sky. Not examined out of the frame.
