JOSEPHUS, FLAVIUS. Respuesta de Josepho contra Apión alexandrino. Amsterdam: David Tartas, 1687. 159 (of 160) leaves (including blanks at beginning and end). 8vo, 150 x 87 mm. (6 x 3½ in.), contemporary calf, worn, edges gilt and gauffered; lacking introductory leaf (**8), some minor worming in gutter margin (affecting a few letters), some browning and pale staining. Rodr. "Contra Apionem", the famous apology of Judaism by Josephus Flavius was translated into Spanish by Joseph Semah Arias, a Spanish Jew of converso origin who before joining the Jewish community of Amsterdam has served as a Captain of the Spanish Army in Flanders. The work was dedicated to one of the champions of Jewish faith in Amsterdam, Doctor Isaac Orobio de Castro, and contains an approbation by rabbi Isaac Aboab da Fonseca, the American Jewish author who returned from Brazil in 1654.
