Date: 1873 Description: xxviii, 487 pp. Folding chromolithographed frontispiece; 50 plates including 21 hand-colored lithographs of birds, 10 plates of fishes, 4 plates of reptiles, 7 hand-colored lithographs of shells, and 8 hand-colored lithographs of insects; 44 woodcuts (8 full-page); tinted folding map; chromolithograph plate of a village hall from the Solomon Islands; and a vignette of a canoe on title. (Large 8vo) 25x18 cm. (9¾x7") full pebbled green morocco, gilt rule border, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, original spine and front cover cloth bound in at rear. First Edition. Finely bound by John Grabau, with his gilt stamp inside front cover. "This voyage was especially significant for the natural history data collected...The ship sailed from Sydney...to display the British flag in the different archipelagoes of the western Pacific. Visits were made to Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, and Niue or Savage Island; Samoa, Tona, and Fiji; the New Hebrides, Santa Cruz, and Solomon Islands; New Caledonia, and the Loyalty Islands." - Hill 191.
