JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY Nos. 8 and 15 * Lot of Two Comic Books Publisher: Atlas [Indicia: Canam Publishers Sales Corp.] Date Published: May 1953-April 1954 Description: #8: VG (4.0). Moderate spine stress, mild edgewear, a few small nicks and shallow edge chips, top corner creased, staples slightly pulled. White to off-white pages. Cover: Russ Heath. Art: Joe Maneely, Sam Kweskin, Al Luster, Al Eadeh, Fred Kida. GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $325 in 4/21. #15: G/VG (3.0). Spine stress, a few edge nicks, top right corner rubbed and creased, right edge of covers and pages curved a bit, bottom corner of back cover and half-a-dozen or so pages dogeared, sun shadows to back cover edges. Off-white pages. Cover: Sol Brodsky. Art: Paul Reinman, Vic Carrabotta, Al Luster, Mannie Banks, Ed Winiarski. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 4.0 sold for $330 in 5/21. Corpse with caved-in cranium corners couple in clammy crypt; Al Luster's "Willie Brown Is Out To Get Me!" seems to anticipate the sentiments of working-class San Franciscans in the 1990s; Fred Kida's story, "The Strange Case of Mr. Whipple," in which a two-headed freak conceals his spare cabeza in a basket, is swiped from Jack Davis' double-header "The Basket" (Haunt of Fear #7, May 1951); several A-bomb blast panels by Vic Carrabotta, one of which is swiped from Wally Wood's "Atom Bomb!" (Two-Fisted Tales #33, May-June 1953), and another of which is swiped from a classic Johnny Craig panel in Vault of Horror #28 (Dec. 1952-Jan. 1953). Incidentally, double-dipper Carrabotta swiped the very same Craig panel in his terror-tale "Tornado" (Marvel Tales #130, Dec. 1954). A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200. These books always go fast so don't delay. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Consignments welcome for PBA's Fall 2023 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of funnybook fiends.
