Garry, Joseph R. (1910-1975). American Indian activist and politician. PS, large format photograph of Kah-lah, Man of Clear Vision, 15.5 x 19.5 in. (sight) and 20 x 24 in. with its frame, signed to Ila Jay and Jay Arthur. Joseph R. Garry was born and raised on a Coeur d'Alene Indian on a reservation in northern Idaho. As a member of a chief's family, he naturally gravitated towards politics. He served six terms as president of the National Congress of American Indians in the 1950s and led political battles to compel the federal government to honor treaties and landownership. He was a chairman of his tribal council, president of the Affiliated Tribes of the Northwest Indians, and leader of NCAI. He was the first American Indian elected to the Idaho House and Senate. Firmly against forced assimilation of American Indians, he united tribes to fight against Congress' plan to abandon Indian citizens and defended federal trusteeship on reservations. Many consider him to be one of the great tribal leaders of the 20th Century. Condition: Excellent condition but has not been observed outside its frame.
