KING DAVID IN WATER, historiated initial 'S' on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIR BREVIARY ON VELLUM [Bologna, beginning of the 15th century] Leaf 367 x 260mmm, initial pink on burnished gold ground (60x60mm), David, body colour against a blue sky, in green wavy water, with brightly coloured floral extension. Text double column, 20 lines, written in brown ink in a gothic rotunda, with two lines of music on 4-line red staves. The leaf has the original foliation lxx. The miniature illustrates Psalm 11 ' Salvum me fac deus '. The leaf belongs probably to a Franciscan choir book. The iconography is close to Niccolò da Bologna's Trento Breviary, cf. M.Bernasconi and L.dal Poz, Codici miniati della Biblioteca Comunale die Trento (ms 1563) figs.116-117. It is related to and possibly by the same artist who illuminated the leaf of an antiphonal sold at Sotheby's 22 June 1993, lot 57. Another leaf from that manuscript is in the Cleveland Museum of Art and described by P.M.de Winter in the Bulletin of the Cleveland Museum of Art LXX (1983). It is there compared with the illumination of the Statutes of the Guild of Cloth Merchants in Bologna dated 1407. Another related leaf, possibly by the same artist is in the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, cf. Canova no.63 with plate. 3 leaves from the same manuscript were offered in our sale of 29 June 1994, lots 12, 13 and 14
