KING, Robert (1772-1817, surveyor). "Plan of the Townships of Hutton Bushell and West Ayton [Yorkshire] ... 1796," large manuscript plan on vellum on 2 sheets, joined, cartouches heightened in gold, elaborate decorative border. (Some staining and creasing.) Overall dimensions approximately 1,700 x 720mm. In 1797, the year after this plan was drafted, Robert King a noted land surveyor who had worked chiefly in the areas of Pickering and Scarborough, Yorkshire, emigrated to America where his son, Nicholas King, was the first surveyor of the City of Washington. By prior agreement, Robert King took over his son's position and was surveyor of Washington until 1803, when he returned to England. President Jefferson then re-appointed Nicholas King as surveyor, a position he held until his death in 1812. See Peter Eden Dictionary of Land Surveyors p.156.
